What to do in Venice
Not to be missed is St Mark’s square, standing beneath the iconic grandeur of the Basilica San Marco and the fabulous Doge’s Palace surrounded by the hustle and bustle of this wonderful city you will have to pinch yourself to believe you are actually there! You can visit the Doge’s Palace full of its priceless artwork and see the Bridge of Sighs which was where prisoners made their final walk and sighed in sadness at the unfairness of life!
Wander the streets of the Dorsoduro district next to the Grand Canal and you will wonder at how such a vibrant city becomes a village – little alleys with tiny shops selling Murano glass and Venetian masks and small eateries catering for discerning Venetians wanting to avoid tourist prices! Stand on the Rialto Bridge and watch the sun set over the Grand Canal or take a gondola trip from the Rialto or Accademia and see the city as it should be seen – from the water! Catch a motorboat for the short trip across the Venetian lagoon to the island of Murano where you can watch the craftsmen make intricate glassware and later haggle with the lacemakers over a souvenir to take home.

Venice is wonderful at any time of the year – during the winter it is nice to visit when there are less crowds, spring and autumn are warm and pleasant. The city can be very hot in August when visitor numbers are at their peak. Carnival takes place every February for 10 days and, whilst great fun, prices reflect this popular time and are high.
