Nobody returns from a Rome City Break disappointed. With a history spanning over 2,800 years there is always something to interest even the most seasoned traveller. From its humble origins as an Italian village, Rome has evolved through the centuries to become a major political and cultural centre whilst retaining its status as one of the most beautiful cities of the ancient world, all of which help to make the ‘Eternal City’ eternally popular!
What to see …
Why is Rome so popular with our
clients? - simply because it is such a wonderful destination! Rome, the Eternal
City, has a wealth of historical attractions second to none! Where else can
compare with sights such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Roman Forum? A
visit to the Vatican City itself is a must where the Sistine Chapel with
Michelangelo’s beautiful frescoes will enthrall you. St Peter’s Cathedral is
one of the largest and most important cathedrals in the world and overlooks the
Piazza San Pietro, the famous square where the Pope addresses the Christian
world. If you are lucky you may even be able to coincide your city break to
Rome with a Papal blessing. We also recommend including a visit to the stunning
Trevi Fountain but be sure to throw in a coin, which allegedly guarantees a
return visit to this magnificent city! No visit is complete without a visit to
the famous Spanish Steps, the hip and trendy place to hang out in the heart of
Rome city centre, which is surrounded by a superb selection of up-market
restaurants, bars and boutiques. A visit to the tranquil Villa Borghese and its
beautiful park is a wonderful escape from city life in the unlikely event that
you tire of all the shops, sightseeing and wonderful food during your stay. A
visit to Rome isn’t just about historical sights. Rome City Breaks are a
perfect choice for anyone interested in an exciting break with excellent shops,
nightlife, bars and restaurants, not to mention the superb coffee!
Where to stay…
We are happy to recommend any of the
proprties on our website, but the 3 star Hotel Virgilo comes well recommended
by Cities Direct clients, with an excellent location and friendly staff. The
Palladium Palace is a 4 star hotel with a good location close to attractions
and for metro and hop on/off tourist buses. For a more luxurious stay, the 5
star Aldrovandi Palace is a beautiful hotel, with excellent rooms and great
staff in relaxed surroundings. Quite a walk from the city centre but it offers
a free half hourly shuttle for guests.
When to go…
City breaks in Rome are popular all year
round. The busiest, (and most expensive) times to travel are the spring and the
autumn when the temperatures are pleasant. Choose to travel winter and you can
take advantage of much better prices and you will find the major attractions
much quieter.
What to eat…
Italian cuisine needs no introduction,
but specialities of the Rome region include carbonara and amatriciana sauces.
Also popular is Saltimbocca Alla Romagna, Roman style veal with ham and sage,
but you will also find fish on most menus and there is a wide variety of
international restaurants too.
Getting there…
We offer direct flights to Rome
