The capital of Latvia and gem of the Baltics, Riga is enjoying a renaissance with many historic buildings restored or being restored to their former glory. Brimming with history the city is one of Europe’s most attractive, rich in culture and with an exciting nightlife it is easy to see why Riga city breaks are growing in popularity.
What to see …
Situated on the mouth of the River
Daugava at the southern end of the Gulf of Riga on the Baltic, Riga is famous
for its Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) architecture and has some of the best
examples of this in the world, so much so that much of Riga is a UNESCO World
Heritage site. Examples are spread around the city or just head straight for
Alberta iela (Albert Street). In the heart of the old town, Doma Laukums is the
largest square in Riga and home to the Dome Cathedral. Having undergone several
transformations it has several styles and is home to a famous organ which is
still in regular use. One of the city’s most recognised buildings is the
beautiful House of the Blackheads, badly damaged in World War II, and its ruins
subsequently demolished by the Russians, it’s reconstruction ended in 1999.
Next door, in deliberate stark contrast, is the Occupation Museum detailing the
difficulties of being Latvian under the Nazis and the Soviets. Another popular
attraction is the 13th century St Peter’s Church with its amazing
tower which was historically built of wood. These days you can take a lift to
the top for the most spectacular view of the city. The Latvian Freedom monument
was erected in 1934 and is the Latvian symbol of independence, and certainly
worth seeing. Housed in five old German zeppelin hangars is Riga’s Central
Market. Here hundreds of market stall holders sell their wares from fresh and
local produce to CD’s, and it is well worth a visit for the vibrant atmosphere,
to taste some local produce and perhaps pick up a bargain. Close to the river,
Riga Castle was first built in the 15th Century and has been
destroyed and rebuilt several times since. Today it houses the Office of the
President and the National History Museum which is open to the public.

When to go…
With cold and dark winters and warm
summers Riga is great all year round although spring through to autumn tend to
be most popular.
What to eat…
Due to the influence of its neighbours
and invaders, Latvian cuisine is hard to define. However, traditional popular
dishes include meatballs made from pork, meat filled pastries (like mini meat
pies) and rasols, salads which may include potato, bacon and small pickled
cucumbers.
