The most northerly capital of the world, Reykjavik is a fantastic city break destination. For a lover of more unusual city breaks Reykjavik is a perfect choice. It is not your typical European capital. Its low-level wooden buildings with their traditional corrugated roofs create the appearance of a small, rural town rather than a major, tourist city. Reykjavik is also surrounded by incredible, breath taking scenery - the majestic formations of Mt. Esja, the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay and the mystical Snaefellsjokull glacier.

In addition to museums, galleries, monuments and churches there are also untypical sights to explore on a city break to Reykjavik. Visitors make trips out to the stunning Blue Lagoon and the remarkable landscape and geysirs of the Golden Circle.
A few major UK airports operate flights to and from Keflavík International Airport, which is about 45 minutes drive from Reykjavik. This journey can be made by taxi although most people opt for the convenient bus service available.

Reykjavik city breaks are most popular during the summer months from June to August although there is plenty to do in the spring, autumn and winter when accommodation prices do drop. There is also a particularly festive atmosphere to be enjoyed on Reykjavik, Christmas city breaks. It is important to note, however, that the number of daylight hours reduces considerably in the winter.
It is clear that city breaks to Reykjavik are generally more expensive than those to other European cities. Flights, accommodation, transport and food and drink are expensive but then a city break to Reykjavik is quite unlike any other city break! In terms of eating out, although Reykjavik boasts some of the best seafood in the world, for those wishing to choose a budget option there are many fast food establishments to choose from in addition to the fine restaurants in the city.
There is an array of tremendously exciting things to do on a Reykjavik city break. The city itself lies by the harbour and rests alongside the Tjörnin lake (skated on in the winter). At the entrance to the harbour there is the enormous, landmark sculpture of a Viking boat and the unique form of the famous 72-metre Hallgrímskirkja church steeple dominates the skyline. The National Museum and National Gallery of Iceland offer fascinating collections of Icelandic art and relics. The Viking history presented in the National Museum draws many visitors of all ages. There are other wonderful things to explore within the city but two other attractions that must be mentioned are the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle: highlights of Reykjavik city breaks. Visitors can embark on trips to visit the stunning, blue mass of geothermal seawater that is the Blue Lagoon and take a quick dip or indulge in additional spa treatments. The Golden Circle encompasses some of the most impressive natural sights that the landscape has to offer including the Gullfoss waterfall and Iceland’s most famous natural water Geysir.
