Two of the most striking landmarks of New York City are the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. The towering, Art Deco, Empire State Building is extremely popular due to the incredible views that it provides across Manhattan. The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbour and is of symbolic importance not just to New Yorkers but also to all Americans. In 1886 it was presented as a gift from France to the USA to represent America’s Independence and the freedom and opportunity offered to those who arrived at Ellis Island as immigrants. Many visitors on a city break to New York City make a day trip to Ellis Island, the gateway for more than 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954.
