Moscow City Breaks

Red Square is perhaps the most recognisable symbol of Russia and the ideal place to visit first on your Moscow city break.  It is located in the middle of the city and is surrounded by all of Moscow’s most famous sites such as St Basil’s Cathedral, the Kremlin and the Historical Museum.

Most tourists pay a visit to the Mausoleum of Lenin where the leader’s embalmed body is on view.  Be prepared to get there early and queue for a long time as it is a very popular though ghoulish sight!    Whilst in the Square you simply must take in Saint Basil’s Cathedral and in particular try to see it at night when the cupola-topped towers are floodlit.  The Cathedral was built in 1555-61 by Ivan the Terrible and it is rumoured that he ordered the architect’s eyes to be pulled out once the cathedral was designed to ensure that he would never design anything so beautiful again!

The old Moscow fortress, or Kremlin, is located nearby and must not be missed on your Moscow city break and you could easily spend a day here in order to take in all that is on show.  Particularly worth visiting are the Cathedral of the Assumption, the State Armoury and the Faceted Palace.

If culture is what you are after on your Moscow city break, then you must take a trip to the Tretyakov Galleries which house the world’s best collection of Russian art and also to the Puskhin Museum of Fine Arts where you will find many famous Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings on display.  However if you fancy simply chilling out on your Moscow city break then go to the Arbat, a pedestrian street lined with cafes, street vendors and street performers – it is the perfect spot to unwind over a coffee and watch the world go by.

City breaks to Moscow are popular throughout the year with each season offering its own benefits.
