Dresden City Breaks

Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. With a pleasant location and a mild climate on the Elbe, as well as Baroque-style architecture and numerous world-renowned museums and art collections, Dresden has been called "Elbflorenz" (Florence of the Elbe).

Dresden City Breaks

The city of Dresden used to be known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city centre, until it was 75% destroyed by Allied bombing in 1945. The impact of the bombing has considerably changed the face of the city. Some restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Semper Oper and the Dresdner Frauenkirche. Since the German reunification in 1990, Dresden has regained importance as one of the cultural, educational, political and economic centres of Germany.

One of the most popular places for tourists to visit on their short city break is the Zwinger Palace, built in Baroque style, and today is served as the orangery, exhibition gallery and festival arena of the Dresden Court. Do not miss the "Alte Meister" - you'll find the famous Madonna Sistina of Rafael there including the famous angels. On the list of places to see on your Dresden city break should also be the Samper Oper, one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world. Its history saw many operas of Wagner and Strauss having their first nights there. Originally built in 1841, destroyed first by fire in 1869 and then in 1945 by bombing, during the last months of World War II. The Opera was rebuilt in 1985 to be almost identical to its appearance before the war and today you can see operas, ballets and productions of the youth programme.

Another place worth seeing on your Dresden city break is the Frauenkirche, the original Church of Our Lady, built in the 18th century, destroyed in the firebombing of Dresden during World War II and reconstructed in 2005. Do not miss the tower and ruins in the basement.
