Set on the Elbe River Dresden contains some beautiful examples of German baroque architecture. In 1945, almost the entire city centre was destroyed in a pitiless Allied bombing attack that cost at least 35,000 people their lives. Today, much of the city has been restored and Dresden – known as the “Florence of the Elbe” - is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Highlights here include the magnificent buildings around the Theaterplatz as well as many art treasures housed in the city museums.
