Once the richest and most powerful city in the world, go mad in a city with a vibrancy and atmosphere that will enrapture lovers of all things Spanish.

Visit: The museums of the "golden triangle", namely the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza. Saunter along the Gran Via, or unwind in the extensive gardens of the Retiro Park. Come dark absorb the unstoppable nightlife from traditional flamenco through to hard-core dance.

Eat: Magnificent and hearty meat stews or humble staples such as Sopa de Ajo (garlic soup) and Tortilla de patatas (potato omelette). Meander through a menu of tapas, an old gastronomic tradition where savoury tidbits are served as appetizers all washed down with a small glass of wine or beer.

Shop: In a variety of large department stores and designer boutiques. This is a well-dressed nation with a love of fashion so you can take your pick of the designers. For the less extravagant, leather goods are low-priced and good quality. The Rastro weekly market is a great haunt for all manner of secondhand goods and in particular antiques.

Spend: The Euro

Expect: A continental Mediterranean climate. Winters are cold and dry; summers are hot with spring and autumn being generally warm, although rain is not uncommon.

Go: Any time of year but if you like the idea of having the city to yourself, August is a time when the locals leave the city en-masse.
