Once a small trading centre and port community on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok is now the 22nd most populous city in the world with an estimated population of between 15-20 million. The city's wealth of cultural sites makes it one of the world's most popular tourist destinations.

The city is home to countless beautiful palaces and temples, the most notable of which are the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Wat Pho houses the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. It is the largest temple in Bangkok and named for its huge reclining Buddha measuring 46 metres (151 ft) long and covered in gold leaf. The Buddha's feet alone are 3 metres (10 ft) long! Bangkok also boasts a variety of colourful and lively markets and a huge array of international restaurants, although you are sure to want to sample the delicious Thai cuisine.
