Located on both sides of the River Rhine, Cologne is the fourth largest city in Germany. It is steeped in history and offers the visitor famous museums, romantic churches, fabulous shopping and art galleries ranging from renaissance to avant-garde.
What to see...
The Cologne
skyline is dominated by the magnificent cathedral ‘Dom’ and is the most famous
landmark of the city drawing visitors in with its soaring twin spires and
intricate stained glass windows. It is packed with art and treasures and a
climb up the 512 steps of the South tower for breathtaking views of the city
below is an opportunity not to be missed for the more energetic traveller. The
Alter Markt is the main market square and home to the traditional Christmas
markets in December. Nearby is the Rathaus (Town Hall) infront of which is a
Jewish bath house dating from the 12th century, and wander around
and discover the delights of the Old Town. One of the most famous museums
is the Museum Ludwig, which, with its wave shaped roof, houses an important
collection of modern art since the 20th century including pieces by
Picasso, Warhol and Dali. For something a little different the
Schokoladenmuseum (chocolate museum) tells the story of the cocoa bean - be
sure to try a delicious chocolate covered waffle. Cologne has lively bars and
cosy restaurants so those looking to wine and dine in style will find a wide of
choice of excellent cuisine. Why not take to the water for a Rhine cruise and
enjoy a more relaxed pace whilst admiring the panoramic views of Cologne and
the Rhine?

When to go…
Traveling to
Cologne in December is especially popular with its traditional German Christmas
market to browse and enjoy a glass of warm gluhwein.
What to eat…
A traditional
local recipe is potato pancakes and braised pickled beef and it would be rude
not to sample the Kolsch pale ale, which is served in a 200ml glass.

Dublin, Edinburgh and Manchester. Cologne can also be reached in around four
