SEASONAL
OFFERS
All cities have high and low seasons,
the exact dates and months will depend on the city. Generally
speaking peak months for city breaks are March to June, September and
October. City centre hotels
can have great deals in July & August, although flights can be
expensive over this summer period unless you book up well in advance.
For the very best deals, travel from November to February, excluding
the holiday period over Christmas and New Year.
HISTORY
The tradition of the Christmas Market goes as far back as
the late Middle Ages in the German speaking part of Europe. It is believed
that the Dresden Christmas market, first held in 1434, is amongst the
oldest. The sights and aromas of a Christmas Market awaken the spirit
of Christmas in us all. It is a wonderful time of year when cities
take on a whole new persona with the brightly decorated stalls, coloured
lights and the seasonal aromas of Christmas food and drink.
BEST SELLERS
Traditionalists will want to head to Germany or Austria
for their Christmas Market city break. Berlin is a perennial best seller
and features well over 50 Christmas Markets and advent bazaars every
year. Of the 50 markets one of the most popular is the market situated
next to Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. The great thing about this
market is you are also right by the bustling Kurfüstendamm – another
shoppers’ paradise. As a Christmas Market favourite, accommodation
fills quickly around this time, so make sure you book well in advance.
SOMEWHERE DIFFERENT
Christmas Markets don’t just stop with
Germany and Austria. There are many other rising stars on the Christmas
Market scene. The Baltic cities of Tallinn & Riga attach great
importance to the traditions of Christmas with both cities claiming
to be the home of the first Christmas tree. Today the Christmas Markets
bring a fairytale charm to the cities and you can be sure to find some
unique Christmas gifts from the local craftsmen.
CLOSER TO HOME
Don’t feel you have to travel far to enjoy a
Christmas Market break. Edinburgh, London, Leeds and Lincoln to name
but a few of our own cities would make ideal Christmas Market breaks.
Alternatively, a quick journey by Eurostar can have you in the heart
of Brussels and Paris where tasty seasonal fayre is the order of the
day. Bruges is just a short onward rail journey from Brussels and beckons
with a promise of romantic canals, cosy cafés and delicious
hand-made chocolates.
WHY STOP AT JUST ONE?
If all that choice is leaving you undecided,
why not visit more than one Christmas Market? We are experts at tailor-making
multi centre city breaks. Prague, Vienna & Budapest would be a
winning combination during the festive season with all three cities
boasting wonderful Christmas Markets. Stay closer to home and travel
by rail to Brussels and Bruges where fine Belgian crafts, food and
drink will have you counting the sleeps until Santa’s arrival!
