Cheltenham Spa was specifically designed in its 18th and 19th century heyday as a pleasure and health resort for wealthy visitors - the legacy of which is an exceptional range of quality accommodation, restaurants and entertainment which make it such a perfect city break destination. You can still sample the spa waters by visiting the Pittville pump room. The Pump room is perhaps the most famous example of Regency architecture in Cheltenham – a town that has an abundance of buildings from this period. It stands in regal splendour at one end of Pittville Park about two miles from the city centre and is definitely worth a visit on your Cheltenham city break.

Cheltenham will make a delightful city break whichever time of year you choose to travel. Renowned for its horse racing as much as its regency buildings, there is something for everyone. In recent years the city has started to host a Christmas Market when the elegant promenade is transformed in to a magical grotto, lined with stalls packed with an array of exciting Christmas gifts and goodies. The air is filled with the smell of Gluhwein, pastries and hot roasting chestnuts. As the Cities Direct office is located in Cheltenham we can personally recommend a city break during the Christmas Markets period – we have all succumbed to its pleasures!

Cheltenham really is the gateway to the Cotswolds and whether you arrive by car or choose to use public transport you will find yourself with easy reach of many charming Cotswold towns and villages. Cheltenham is surrounded in all directions by countryside that can only be described as quintessentially English: the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the south and east, and to the west the ancient Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills marking the changing landscapes of the Welsh borderlands. Essential places to visit if you have a bit longer to spend on your city break are the picturesque villages of Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury, Broadway and Painswick, and the ancient wool towns of Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh, Winchcombe and Cirencester. Gloucester and Tewkesbury with their famous Cathedral and Abbey are nearby and a little further afield but still within easy reach are Bath, Worcester and Oxford.
