Switzerland’s third largest city, Basel is uniquely located on the mighty River Rhine and borders both France and Germany. With a beautiful medieval centre and the gateway to the Jura Mountains, Basel city breaks are for those looking for a beautiful destination brimming with culture and world class museums. We offer direct flights from 5 UK airports.
What to see...
Among the must see historical landmarks of the city is the large Market Square,
(Markt Platz) which sells local produce including scrumptious breads and
pastries and a wide variety of fruit and vegetables throughout the week.
In the busy Marktplatz you will also find the magnificent 14th
century Town Hall (Rathaus), a renovated renaissance Palace. Still the seat of
government of the Basel-City Canton, its imposing tower, richly decorated inner
courtyard and fascinating arcades are well worth taking time to see. The
Romanesque ‘Basler Munster’ Cathedral dates from the 12th century
and overlooks the Rhine. Its rich history, red sandstone construction and
multi-coloured tiled roof make this also a must see on any visit. Take
the cable ferry across the Rhine or perhaps let us organise a longer cruise
along this famous river? Book tickets for the ballet, or even an opera as Basel
has many theatres with various productions whichever time of year you choose to
go. Use the wonderful tram network or just stroll through the cobbled
streets admiring the architecture, visit the popular zoological gardens in the
centre or one of the many other beautiful parks of this historical city. Basel
has the highest concentration of museums in Switzerland and is also home to the
world’s most influencial art market each June (ArtBasel) and the Basel
Christmas market is the largest and most traditional in Switzerland. Travel to
Basel following the week after Ash Wednesday and witness Switzerland’s biggest
carnival which is said to rival Venice in the carnival stakes. Whenever
you decide to travel there is plenty to see and do!
