One of the oldest cities on earth with records dating back around 3,500 years, the Greek capital has a rich archaeological history. With great shopping, nightlife, traditional cuisine and direct flights from 4 UK airports, Athens city breaks are popular year round.
What to see...
The Acropolis, a hilltop with the tall white pillars of the Parthenon
dominating the skyline, is a truly iconic image, but the opening of the
‘archaeological promenade’ a 2.5 mile tree lined pedestrian-only pathway
skirting the base of the Acropolis and linking the major archaeological sites,
has transformed walking around the city. Away from traffic noise and
fumes, you are free to explore as much or as little of these historic gems of
the ‘birthplace of western civilisation’ as you like. The new museum of the
Acropolis houses sculptures, artifacts and the treasures that remain from these
ancient times. The Roman Agora, dating back to Julius Caesars reign, contains
monuments such as the gate of Athena Archegetis and the Tower of the Wind. If
you enjoyed the London 2012 Olympics the a must see is the Panathenaic Stadium,
which held the first modern Olympics in 1896 and is built entirely from white
marble. Despite the current economic woes, Athens is a party town and has a
vibrant nightlife scene most days of the week, although things tend to kick off
late, 10pm for dinner at many of the city’s popular tavernas and after midnight
for bars and clubs. For something a little different, visit one of the city’s
fun parks, or Athens Zoo which has a large variety of birds. As you would
expect from somewhere close to the coast, Athens has nearby beaches and
harbours where you can relax, take part in watersports or enjoy a meal at one
of the excellent restaurants. Boast trips to many of the Greek Islands depart
from Piraeus, so why not add-on a lazy stay on one of these beautiful islands
after your Athens stay?
